On Friday evening The Official Opening Ceremony of the 6th Seán MacDiarmada Summer School was officiated by Minister of State Simon Harris at the Seán MacDiarmada homestead. Guests had an opportunity to visit the house and grounds and enjoy a session of traditional music and song. Olive Gallagher gave a welcoming address in Irish. Catherine Fox presented the Minister with a landscape photograph of the local area. This was followed by refreshments at Kiltyclogher Community Centre.

The Theme of this year’s Summer Schools was “The Relevance of the 1916 Proclamation in the Ireland of Today”.

Susan McKay begun Friday evening’s Session – Title: “Though I did not say so”-The Silence Women Keep’.

She then Chaired the lively Panel Discussion, given by Panellists, Eithne McNulty, Seán Ó Súilleabháin, Marie Crawley and Francis White.

Saturday Mornings Session was given by Mary McAuliffe UCD, with the Title: ‘Women and Revolution’-Gender, Politicisation and Participation in the 1916 Rising’.

Due to unforeseen circumstances Roy Garland was not able to attend the Summer School. We are grateful to our Conference Coordinator Proinnsí­os ӓ’Duigneáin who gave a presentation during one of the Sessions.

After lunch Tim Pat Coogan’s: – Title:

‘Limping into History’, followed by a Question and Answer Session concluded a very successful Summer School.
