Opening of Summer School 2016 on June 9th

  • On a beautiful evening in north Leitrim the Opening ceremonies of the 2016 Seán Mac Diarmada Summer School began with a walk in the footsteps of Seán Mac Diarmada led by Leitrim Landscapes Guided Walks from the local school he attended as a child in Corracloona to his family home at Corranmore – 3km away via a beautiful track with views across the Leitrim countryside to the Fermanagh lakelands. Musicians were waiting at the perfectly preserved cottage, now under the guardianship of the OPW. The speakers at the Opening included Olive Gallagher who welcome the attendees on behalf of Kiltyclogher Community Council, Cllr John McCartin, who spoke on behalf of Leitrim County Council and Prin Duignan who gave the historical background to Mac Diarmada’s early years. The Summer School was offically opened by Junior Minister Seán Kyne who recounted the contribution of Mac Diarmada to the 1916 Rising. Daniel Chester presented the Junior Minister and Prin Duignan with walking sticks which were made by members of the National Learning Network to recognise Mac Diarmada’s bravery in light of his disability caused by polio.
